Spinal Twists Iyengar Yoga Workshop

Forward bends are said to be calming to our minds. In this workshop we will focus on the seated forward extensions, and how we can work to experience this calming effect on our mind and nervous system.

 

Patanjali defines Yoga as "Citta Vrtti Nirodha" , the stilling of the changing states of the mind, Patanjali gives many ways in this text on how to accomplish that. Each class and workshop Sheila uses the Sutras to help us deepen our understanding of this subject. How Yoga is not just limited to our Asana practice, in fact our Asana practice is a tool to be used to help guide us toward the possibility of, citta vrtti nirodha. Sheila is a certified Iyengar Yoga instructor and has been practicing and teaching in this system for over two decades. She has been to India to train with the Iyengar family several times, her last trip was this past December, where she was blessed to be in Geeta Iyengars final classes.

Beginner Series

Step by step, Sheila will guide you through a variety of poses and sequences, building and deepening your understanding of how Iyengar Yoga works and how it can continue to grow and expand. This series is designed for everyone, even if you have never done Yoga before. The 4:30 pm class is shorter to introduce a beginner practice to those with physical limitations. All Levels and drop-ins welcome.

About the Instructor - Sheila Bunnell

​Sheila Bunnell began studying yoga in 1998. The following year she began her training with Joan White, one of Iyengar Yoga’s senior teachers and entered the teacher’s training program. In 2007 she became certified as an Iyengar Instructor. Besides her involvement with the Iyengar teacher’s training program, Sheila has continued to pursue her education, studying with a number of Iyengar instructors including, Patricia Walden, Carolyn Christie, Peentz Dubble, and Kofi Busia. She has attended numerous workshops and training events including several classes with BKS Iyengar as well as Prashant and Geeta in the US and in India. She has also attended several lectures with Edwin Bryant on the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and studied Anatomy/Physiology and Kinesiology at the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy.

For the month of February, 2010 she studied at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India and is currently enrolled in the next level of the Iyengar teacher training program with Joan White. Sheila was the Staff Yoga instructor at the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven Ct for four years, and since 2002 has taught numerous classes and workshops at Yoga in Middletown. Having recently moved to Cortland County, NY she looks forward to becoming involved in the local Yoga community as well as continuing to teach classes and workshops in Connecticut and elsewhere. We are blessed to have Sheila as a guest yoga instructor here at Synergy Institute during the fall and winter months.
