Ama and Ayurveda

January 23, 2015

From an Ayurvedic perspective, ama is anything which is undigested. This doesn’t just include food which is undigested in our guts, but images and thoughts which are undigested by our minds.

A coated tongue, smelly feces and urine are indications that there is ama in the body. Also, if you’re feeling tired, lethargic and have a hard time getting going, ama may be the root of those problems. The best way to expel this ama is by fasting or by drinking weak herbal teas for a short time. Folks who are prone to drops in blood sugar may need to eat simple and easily digestible foods with helpful spices, examples being basmati rice and cooked vegetables with cumin, fennel, etc. Probably one of the worst things we do in this society is to continue to eat large meals or eat frequently throughout the day no matter how we feel or what the weather. This doesn’t give the body a chance to clear itself and toxins are able to accumulate because we’re not digesting efficiently or fast enough. What is not used by the body or ama also gives parasites and other unwanted bacteria a home.
