Falling Healthily into Winter

Wow, there seem to be so many changes in the air for everyone!  Even if you’re not experiencing a major shift at this time, you won’t be able to deny the changes in our weather patterns as we move into the winter months—colder, darker, drier.

In Ayurveda, we balance the effects of the season and ease into this change as healthily as possible.  This means not forgetting that we are connected to the earth’s patterns and shifts—even if we mentally ignore these patterns, our bodies have evolved from our adaptations to the earth and its available resources.

A lot of folks talk about doing cleanses this time of year.   I don’t like the word ‘cleanse’ as it seems to connote that we need to be ‘clean’ which couldn’t be further from the truth.   We need good bacteria to help our immune systems ward off those unwanted germs and viruses.   What we are really doing this time of year with more simple diets is releasing summer’s heat in our bodies in preparation for a colder and drier season.
